Among the Pagans Collection
What This Collection Means
In this collaboration with Josh Nadeau from Sword and Pencil, we see a powerful story communicated in this piece of art.
At the top we see the iconic image of Saint Michael the Archangel slaying the devil on either side of a mysterious figure.
This mysterious figure is that of a plague doctor from the 1300s black plague; face covered with the historically accurate beaked mask to avoid the stench of death all around, a cross around his neck, and carrying a lantern filled with love as a metaphor for the Christian living among the pagans.
As the image descends, we see depictions of death and hell to emphasize this point. The clean outer border starts crumble and crack the lower it goes, signifying disorder.
Imprinted on the tombstones at the very bottom is where you’ll find the scripture reference 1 Peter 2:12:
“Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.”
